”Ireland’s response to the migrant crisis – OPERATION PONTUS, an eyewitness from the frontline’
Lt Cdr Mike Brunicardi is the Officer Commanding LÉ James Joyce. He joined the Naval Service in 2001 and was commissioned two years later. He holds a degree in Earth and Ocean Science from NUI Galway and a master’s degree in International Policy and Diplomacy from the University of Staffordshire. Lt Cdr Brunicardi has vast experience at sea and in 2015, while serving on LÉ Niamh, was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea as part of Ireland’s response to the severe migrant crisis. This mission was known as OPERATION PONTUS.
