Waterford Treasures would like to invite you to a talk by Liam Murphy on the topic of ‘The Exiled Waterford Merchants and their Families and Descendants in France and Spain 1600 – 1800’.
Liam Murphy, a native of County Waterford, is a graduate of UCC (NUI) and TCD. He had a distinguished career as a senior official in the Irish Department of Finance.
His first book The Life of Dr Thomas Hussey (1746-1803) Bishop of Waterford and Lismore was published in 2016. His second published in 2018, Waterford Merchants and their Families on Distant Shores – Waterford Traders in Spain and France 1600-1800 – subject of this talk – is a history of the many Waterford merchants who left after they lost their power and trading livelihoods as a result of the
Cromwellian conquest of Ireland in 1650. It deals not only with the careers of these merchants in some of the port cities of France, Spain and the Spanish Netherlands in the 17th & 18th centuries but
also with the lives of some of their families and descendants. These Waterford merchants were particularly successful in Cadiz, Tenerife, St Malo & Nantes.
