Waterford Treasures is delighted to announce Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh for its next Waterford 1100 Talk in the series. Director of Waterford Treasures Eamonn McEneaney commented:
‘When we planned the Waterford 1100 Talks we wanted speakers who would be interesting for as wide a range of people as possible. We are fortunate that someone of Micheál’s standing responded to our invitation. We hope that Micheál will include the great Waterford victories in the All-Ireland in 1948 and 1959 which feature on the top floor of the Bishop’s Palace in his ‘Landmarks along the Route’ talk.’
Sports commentator with Radio Éireann and RTE from 1949 until retirement after the All-Ireland Finals of 2010, Micheál is recorded in The Guinness Book of Records as the world’s longest-serving sports commentator.
A native of Kerry Micheál taught at both primary and second level before going into journalism fulltime. Author of three books, he is involved in the cultural and Irish language movements. He has always given a lot to the community, chairing Bord na Gaeilge, Gaelscoileanna and Guaranteed Irish. He is currently Chair of Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership and of Cairde Choláiste Íde, An Daingean, the only All-Irish Boarding School for girls in Ireland, is a patron of the Special Olympics and a member of the Board of Third Age.
He is married to Helena with whom he has eight children. His hobbies are surprise surprise the GAA, golf, greyhound and horse racing, travel, walking and cycling.
