Epic Walking Tour Highlights
Discover the secrets behind the treasures of Ireland's oldest city
Reginald's Tower
Once described as ‘a massive hinge of stone connecting the two outstretched wings of the city’ this tower has never fallen into ruin and has been in continuous use for over 800 years. Originally the site of a wooden Viking fort, the stone tower we see today actually owes its existence to the Anglo-Normans who made it the strongest point of the medieval defensive walls. Later it was utilised as a mint under King John, before serving various functions under many English monarchs. Weapons, gunpowder and cannons have all been stored here reflecting various periods of Waterford’s turbulent history.
Viking Long Boat
A replica Viking longboat with a red sail called the Vadrafjordr, the Viking name for Waterford, can be found next to Reginald’s Tower.
Greyfriar's Church
Also known as the French Church, Greyfriar’s Church is in the Viking Triangle. It was a Franciscan Monastery from the 13th century and its unusual name derives from the occupation of the building and grounds by French Huguenot refugees between the years 1693 and 1815. The Franciscans were given the name 'grey friars' due to their grey robes. This friary was one of the first in Ireland and was founded by Hugh Purcell in about 1240. Greyfriar’s Church is a monastic site in Ireland’s Ancient East.
