Wed. 30th October: ‘The boycott at Fethard-on-Sea, 1957’
One of the most dramatic events in the history of the modern Irish state, the boycott at Fethard-on-Sea was directed at the local Protestant population by their Catholic neighbours. The cause was a dispute over a mixed marriage, i.e. a marriage between a Catholic and a Protestant. A fascinating insight into the Ireland of the 1950’s.
Dr Eugene Broderick taught history and served as Principal in the Mercy School Waterford. He completed MA and PhD degrees in history at UCC. He has written and lectured extensively on various aspects of nineteenth and twentieth century Irish history. This is his seventh series of talks since 2016 on 20th century Ireland.
