MoT Expansion Photocall Oct2025 P Browne 4

From 28th March 2026, the Irish Museum of Time, one of Waterford’s most popular museums, will unveil the world’s largest collection of Black Forest cuckoo clocks in a spectacular new gallery.

The display features hundreds of remarkable clocks, many dating from the 19th century when cuckoo clock design reached its artistic peak. Visitors will encounter an astonishing variety of historic clocks, including one, two and eight-day clocks, automaton clocks, miniature clocks, elaborate showpieces, and intricately carved woodland scenes. Each clock reflects the extraordinary artistry and engineering that made the cuckoo clock one of the most recognisable and beloved timepieces in the world.

Cuckoo clock making began in the forested valleys of southwest Germany in the 18th century. Skilled woodcarvers and clockmakers combined their talents to produce clocks adorned with detailed carvings and animated figures, often inspired by the natural surroundings of the Black Forest.

This extraordinary collection was curated and donated by David Boles and Colman Curran, and curated by former Waterford Treasures Director Eamonn McEneaney, whose shared passion for horology brings history to life. Their passion for horology has helped bring together an extraordinary range of clocks, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore the history, craftsmanship and charm of this iconic form of timekeeping.

Among the highlights of the exhibition is a rare century-old fairground organ — a spectacular mechanical marvel that delights both the eye and the ear. Together, the clocks and mechanical pieces create a unique and immersive display celebrating the creativity and ingenuity of Black Forest clockmakers.

This remarkable new gallery offers visitors a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the magic of the world’s most enchanting clocks in one place.
