Maritime Gallery

The Port of Waterford and Waterford Treasures are proud to announce an exciting new partnership to create a permanent Maritime Gallery celebrating Waterford’s rich seafaring heritage.

Following on from last year’s celebration of 1111 years as Ireland’s oldest port, this landmark project reflects a shared commitment to preserving and showcasing the city and county’s deep connection to the sea. The new Maritime Gallery will explore Waterford’s maritime story across centuries – from shipbuilding and global trade to migration, fishing, and everyday life on the river – placing a special focus on the people whose lives were shaped by the port.

As part of this initiative, an open call is now being made to the public. We are seeking objects, artefacts, photographs, documents, and personal stories connected to Waterford’s maritime past. From shipyard tools and sailors’ memorabilia to family records and river-related treasures, every contribution will help bring this gallery to life. No item or story is too small—each one plays a role in telling Waterford’s story.

A series of open days will take place throughout May, where members of the public are invited to bring along items and share their memories:

  • 9th May – Medieval Museum (City Open Day), 11 am – 4 pm
  • 10th May – Fisherman’s Hall, Dunmore East, 2 pm – 6 pm
  • 16th May – Coast Guard Cultural Centre, Tramore, 12 pm – 4 pm
  • 17th May – Faithlegg National School, Cheekpoint/Passage, 12 pm – 2 pm

A special request is also being made for the return or loan of a historic diving helmet from the iconic Waterford dredger, the SS Portláirge, believed to be in private hands, which would make a striking centrepiece for the new gallery.

Located in the Medieval Museum, the Maritime Gallery will celebrate the legacy of Waterford’s historic shipyards, including Neptune Ironworks, White’s Shipyard, and the Penrose Shipyard, and honour the generations who helped shape Waterford into a thriving port city.
